ALEX KEEN TO BE THE UMPIRE; HOCKEY.

Byline: TIM JOHNSON

A TEENAGE hockey umpire based in Ormskirk was selected by the Hockey Association to attend a national high performance assessment camp.

Alex Whalley, who is a sixth form student at Merchant Taylors' School, Crosby, was one of only six young umpires nationwide to get the nod.

Alex said: "I found the course demanding but very rewarding, and it is very exciting to be selected among the best young umpires.

"I hope to further my achievements with umpiring in tangent with pursuing a career in the financial services."

The residential three-day course aimed to give talented young umpires first-hand experience of an international training environment, in preparation for potential future involvement with the National Age Group Squad.

The A-level student has umpired a number of regional under-18 and under-16 events and will continue to officiate at a high standard at club level.
