ALDUS UNVEILS NEW 'SMART' DRAWING PROGRAM AT PC EXPO
NEW YORK, June 23 /PRNewswire/ -- At PC Expo, Aldus Corp. (NASDAQ: ALDC) today announced Aldus IntelliDraw 1.0 for Microsoft Windows and the Apple Macintosh. Developed by the Aldus Consumer Division, formerly known as Silicon Beach Software, IntelliDraw is a cross-platform, "smart" drawing program that provides a whole new way to visually experiment, refine and show ideas.
IntelliDraw's unique approach enables people to create dynamic drawings in which objects stay aligned, distributed or connected in whatever way users want, even as the objects get moved or manipulated. IntelliDraw can be used as a general-purpose drawing program by anyone who needs to draw. Its solutions-oriented tools, however, are also designed for specialized artwork, such as complex diagrams, organizational charts, space plans, technical drawings, fliers and forms.
"IntelliDraw is the easiest way to create and refine dynamic drawings," stated Steve Cullen, vice president and general manager of the Aldus Consumer Division. "Customers can concentrate on exploring ideas instead of painstakingly rendering them on a computer. IntelliDraw's 'smart' tool set provides a very high value for consumers by reducing the tedium of manual work and rework."
OBJECT-ORIENTED FOR "SMART" DRAWING AND CROSS-PLATFORM
 COMPATIBILITY
IntelliDraw is based on a platform-independent object-oriented architecture that allows people to create "smart" artwork by establishing relationships among the objects they draw. These relationships can be based on spatial, alignment or dimensional requirements; links or connections between objects; "master item- clone" relationships; or many other kinds of interconnections.
Once established, the relationships remain intact no matter how much the individual components change. They can also be set up so that a change in one object does alter other related objects.
Object-oriented architecture also allows the Windows and Macintosh versions of IntelliDraw to share a common code base, permitting cross- platform compatibility and seamless file sharing. Each version imports or exports files in standard file formats. Both also support interapplication communication -- the Macintosh version via Publish and Subscribe, and the Windows version via object linking and embedding (both as a client and a server). IntelliDraw files can be added to any application that can accept its export formats, including Aldus FreeHand, Aldus PageMaker and Aldus Persuasion.
SMART TOOLS FOR VISUAL "WHAT IFS"
IntelliDraw's automated, object-based controls enable users to draw graphics quickly and pursue any number of "what if" scenarios. Its Symmetrigon tool, for example, lets users draw symmetrical shapes automatically, without the need to join duplicate pieces. Using the Connectigon tool, they can draw polygons whose sides remain attached even while the object is being moved or reshaped. Users can also create complex shapes quickly in IntelliDraw by choosing menu commands, say, to add shapes together or cut the shape of one object from another.
IntelliDraw provides many tools for altering artwork automatically. Its "clonable" masters, for example, enable users to edit a master object, then have all of its copies change as well. By "linking" objects together, users can alter an entire drawing by modifying only one element. This is useful when someone wants to see how large an entire graphic would become if one of its components was enlarged to a specific dimension. The program's unique "Sticky" connectors allow users to join objects by lines that will stretch, rotate or remain rigid to keep the objects connected even when the user makes changes.
Other automated features are designed to speed up precision drawing. The Align/Distribute tool, for instance, defines a "frame" within which objects are automatically aligned and distributed according to user-specified rules. Optional automatic dimension lines and values display the distance between any two points, then update any time the user alters the drawing. An "Auto-Align" command displays guidelines to show when the corners, centers or edges of two objects have been aligned.
IntelliDraw also includes "smart" templates and clip art that have predefined object relationships built into them to save users time. The art, for example, provides a set of dynamic objects that can be manipulated in the same way as any other objects users draw. Thus people can make a clip-art tree "grow" to project what a landscape might look like over time, or experiment with space plans by enlarging a table and having more chairs added automatically.
"IntelliDraw goes beyond basic drawing to provide new tools and capabilities that grow with the user's skill and needs," said Kevin LaRue, IntelliDraw product marketing manager. "IntelliDraw is a great addition to anyone's graphic software toolkit."
