ALDUS ELECTS BRAINERD CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD; SEARCH FOR NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER BEGINS

SEATTLE, Aug. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Aldus Corporation (NASDAQ: ALDC) today announced that Paul Brainerd has been named the company's first chairman of the board of directors. In connection with his election to chairman, a search for his replacement as chief executive officer will begin immediately. The firm Heidrick & Struggles has been retained by the board to conduct the search. Brainerd will remain president and chief executive officer until his successor is named.
Concurrent with Brainerd's election, the position of chief operating officer (COO) has been eliminated, and Sandy Smith has elected to resign from the company, effective immediately.
Brainerd, 45, founded Aldus in 1984. Since then, he has served as the company's president. Under his leadership, Aldus has become one of the world's 10 largest microcomputer software companies with annual revenues in excess of $174 million. For its second quarter ended July 2, 1993, Aldus reported near-record quarterly revenue of $45.6 million.
"After almost 10 years of near total focus on Aldus, I've decided to move into the role of chairman," said Brainerd. "This move will enable me to continue to help guide the company, while allowing some time for me to pursue my personal interests outside of the software industry."
As chairman, Brainerd will focus on Aldus' long-term business vision and corporate strategy. He will also continue his activities as a company spokesman.
"Paul's commitment to excellence, his integrity and values, and his gift for envisioning the marriage of technology and customer needs will continue to serve Aldus well as he transitions into his new role," said Aldus director, Andy Smith.
Sandy Smith, 44, joined Aldus in 1988 as vice president of operations. In 1992, she was appointed COO, assuming senior management responsibility for sales and marketing, product development, operations, finance and worldwide subsidiaries. Those functions will now report directly to the chief executive officer.
Aldus Corporation creates computer software solutions that help people throughout the world effectively communicate information and ideas. The company focuses on three main lines of business: applications for the professional publishing and prepress markets; applications for the consumer market; and service and support for professional end-users. Aldus has subsidiaries in Europe and the Pacific Rim serving a worldwide network of dealers and distributors.
