ALDUS ANNOUNCES SUPERPAINT 3.5

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Aldus Corp. (NASDAQ: ALDC) today at Macworld Expo announced Aldus SuperPaint 3.5 for the Macintosh, an update of its award-winning painting and drawing graphics program. SuperPaint, which has won 15 major awards since 1986, is one of the most popular graphics programs on the Macintosh, with an installed base of over half a million. Developed by the Aldus Consumer Division, SuperPaint is the versatile personal art program that lets everyone -- not just skilled artists -- quickly produce attractive results.
 KEY FEATURES
SuperPaint 3.5 will include several new features and key enhancements. SuperPaint was the first product on the Macintosh to offer users creative flexibility with such unique fill effects as textures, patterns, gradients and colors with any tool. SuperPaint also offers the benefit of expandability -- users can take advantage of plug- in technology to customize or expand the program to suit specific needs.
Added functionality in the new version 3.5 includes direct scanner support through TWAIN, as well as support for QuickTime and Kodak Photo CD, pressure-sensitive tools, and new paint and draw plug-in tools and brushes. It will also ship with several professionally designed templates, and include Gallery Effects: Texture Art samples to aid in the design process.
"SuperPaint suits a wide variety of graphic needs," explained Michelle Alsip-Welsh, product manager for SuperPaint. "It's easy enough to use that a child can have fun using it as a doodle pad, but it also has the depth of features to complement any artist's tool set."
New and enhanced tools are designed to make the user feel like an artist instantly; many are just plain fun to use. Version 3.5 provides support for pressure -- even without a pressure-sensitive tablet. Some of the tools supporting pressure are: the Magic Marker, Calligraphy brush, Twister (better known by users as the "tornado tool"), Variable- size Eraser, Texture Brush, Smudge tool and Charcoal tool. Pressure controls the flow of the ink, spray area and paper choice. A new Copy Brush tool allows the user to select any scanned image as a reference, then either paint a "straight" copy, or modify the image's appearance by applying one of several visual effects included in the program.
A color clarity filter has been added to the program to further enhance SuperPaint's existing image-enhancement capabilities.
Eastman Kodak's new Photo CD technology will also be incorporated into SuperPaint 3.5 through the Quicktime plug-in. Kodak Photo CD support will extend SuperPaint's capabilities for specialized desktop- publishing tasks. Users will be able to place pictures from Kodak's Photo CD at a specified resolution or frames from Quicktime movies directly into SuperPaint.
The program will also be System 7 savvy, with support for Publish & Subscribe, Apple events, TrueType, 32-bit addressing, and virtual memory. In addition to on-line help, Balloon Help provides extensive context-sensitive information on SuperPaint's menus, dialog boxes and palettes.
In response to customer requests, SuperPaint 3.5 will now enable users to print up to 16.8 million colors to an ImageWriter II with a color ribbon. Version 3.5 will also offer increased compatibility with TIFF and EPS files.
In addition to its native format, SuperPaint 3.5 will open or place these file formats: PICT (up to 24-bit color), TIFF (1- to 24-bit color), EPS (Encapsulated PostScript), MacPaint, StartupScreen, Apple Scanner, ThunderScan TIFF, Paint Texture, Draw Texture, QuickTime and TWAIN. SuperPaint will save or export the following file formats: PICT (up to 24-bit color), TIFF (1- to 24-bit color), EPS, MacPaint and Texture.
