ALDUS ANNOUNCES GRANT PROGRAM TO SPUR ADDITIONS DEVELOPMENT

SEATTLE, April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Aldus Corp. (NASDAQ: ALDC) today announced that it is providing up to $150,000 in grant monies to help fund software developers who wish to design and market Additions for Aldus PageMaker. The grant program emphasizes Additions that are aimed at the advertising and workgroup publishing markets, especially magazine and newspaper publishing. Developers from around the world are eligible to apply.
The Additions technology gives developers a specialized text-based language of commands and queries that enables them to tailor PageMaker for special publishing needs. Commands can perform any action that can be done with the mouse or keyboard, and queries can collect specific data from a PageMaker publication. With few exceptions, the language is identical for both Windows and the Macintosh, making most Additions easily adaptable to both platforms.
There are three kinds of Additions: loadable modules, which become an integral part of PageMaker's interface; stand-alone modules, for running PageMaker from another application; and scripts, which enable users to create their own "macros" to automate PageMaker functions. The grant applies to loadable and stand-alone modules.
 How the grant works
The average grant for an Addition ranges from $30,000 to $50,000 (U.S.). Grant recipients receive the first half of the funds when the grant is awarded, and the balance when Aldus deems the Addition is complete. Recipients may choose to market and sell the Addition through their own distribution channels, or to have Aldus assume this role. The Aldus Developer Relations group will manage the grant program and work directly with the developers to help their Additions take shape.
"The grant program is an aggressive, tangible method of promoting Additions and supporting the efforts of Additions developers," said Karen Howe, Aldus' senior product marketing manager for Additions. "It's not a loan, and it's not an advance against royalties. The developer still owns the code and controls the product. Moreover, PageMaker customers also benefit, for they will be able to obtain specialized Additions made by first-rate developers, and have access to them faster than they might otherwise."
The grant program has already spurred many developers to re-examine their deferred Additions in hopes of receiving funding to bring them to completion. "When we heard about the $150,000, we fleshed out four or five new concepts that we've had simmering on the back burner," said Boyd Multerer of Zephyr Design.
"They're great projects, and now we will start working on the prototypes right away!"
 How to apply
Developers interested in applying for a grant should contact Aldus Developer Relations at 206-343-4249 to find out how to submit a preliminary project proposal. Aldus will accept and review the first applications during the third annual Aldus International Developers Conference, April 21-23, at the Four Seasons Olympic Hotel in Seattle, and may award its first grants during the conference.
