ALDUS ANNOUNCES FIRST LICENSING AGREEMENTS FOR FETCH
SEATTLE, Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Aldus Corp. (NASDAQ: ALDC) today announced the first licensing agreements for Aldus Fetch, its forthcoming multi-user, mixed-media database program for cataloging, browsing through, and retrieving digitized media on the Macintosh. Macromedia Inc. and Image Club Graphics Inc. have each licensed a special "browser" version of Fetch to act as a front end to their latest CD-ROM titles.
"Searching for and retrieving digitized media -- from clip art to photos -- has long been a problem for graphics professionals," said John Testement, product marketing manager for Fetch. "Software and hardware vendors realize that Fetch helps solve this problem, and they want to be part of the solution."
 MACROMEDIA
Macromedia, a leading independent supplier of multimedia software products, has licensed the browser portion of Fetch as a front end to Industry At Work: Clip Media 2 for the Macintosh, its newest CD-ROM, which contains high-quality media for creating multimedia presentations and productions. The browser creates a read-only catalog that displays the clip-media elements of Industry At Work in a visual gallery of thumbnail images, rather than a textual list of file names. A single user can browse through, search for, retrieve, move, copy, preview and print the 1,200 graphic, sound, animation and music clips contained on Industry At Work.
 IMAGE CLUB GRAPHICS
Image Club Graphics is one of the largest font and clip art developers for Macintosh and IBM computers and was the first to offer high-quality PostScript clip art and to put EPS clip art on CD-ROM. Image Club has licensed the Fetch browser as a front end to ArtRoom CD-ROM, version 5.2, the latest release of its premier clip art collection, which contains more than 9,000 images. Fetch provides a read-only catalog of ArtRoom's clip art, allowing users to quickly scroll through the collection or search for specific images -- using keywords or other criteria, such as file name or type. Clip art images are stored as thumbnails and references to the original files, so the Fetch catalog takes up very little file space in relation to the size of the images themselves.
 ABOUT FETCH
Aldus Fetch gives users a quick, efficient way to store and locate graphics files, illustrations, clip art libraries, sounds, digitized photographs and video clips, then preview graphics at full resolution or play sounds and movies to hear their contents. People can use Fetch to access media stored on any volume or network, even from a volume that's off-line. They can then readily retrieve a file, without knowing its specific location, file format or originating application.
Users can also sort and search for files by using a variety of criteria, such as user-definable keywords and file types or names, to locate items. Once located, a file can be copied, printed, placed into a document or other means of electronic communication, distributed to other users, or used to directly launch an application for further editing.
 AVAILABILITY AND PRICING
The full-featured standalone version of Aldus Fetch 1.0 will be available from Aldus dealers in the United States and Canada later this year for a suggested price of $295(U.S.). Localized versions for other markets will be announced later. The Fetch browser version of Industry At Work: Clip Media 2 is available now from Aldus and Macromedia dealers, also for $295. The Fetch version of ArtRoom CD-ROM will be available from Aldus and Image Club dealers Dec. 1 for a suggested retail price of $799.
Aldus is negotiating similar licensing agreements with other companies that publish collections of clip art, photographs, QuickTime movies and sound clips, as well as vendors of hardware and software that creates, captures, compresses, stores or manipulates images.
Aldus Corp. creates computer software solutions that help people throughout the world effectively communicate information and ideas.
