SAN DIEGO, Jan. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Aldus Corp.'s (NASDAQ: ALDC) Consumer Division today announced Aldus HomePublisher(TM) for the Macintosh, a new release of its entry-level page layout program. Aldus(R) Personal Press(TM), packaged with value-added components to form a complete publishing solution for individuals, family, home and small business users.
 Key Features
Aldus HomePublisher is a one-stop publishing kit that includes: Aldus Personal Press 2.0, over 50 professionally designed document templates, 12 TrueType fonts from Bitstream, 100 home and small business ClickArt images from T/Maker, and 25 sheets of specialty paper from PaperDirect, all at an estimated street price of $49.99.
"These components combine with the Personal Press application to give users all they need to easily produce first-class publications, including newsletters, brochures, flyers, calendars and lots more," said Mark Myers, product marketing manager for Aldus HomePublisher.
With Aldus HomePublisher, users can automate much of the page layout process by choosing among its more than 50 "intelligent" AutoCreate templates, which make publications practically create themselves. Each template presents users with a series of prompts regarding the type of publication they want to create (newsletter, brochure, flyer, etc.), how they'd like the document to look (two or three columns, with or without a table of contents, and so on) and the steps needed to create it using their own choice of text and graphics. Based on these initial decisions, the program will create, build and clean up the document down to the last detail so that it's ready to print in a matter of minutes.
Aldus HomePublisher assists users during layout with its unique preview technology, which shows the result of almost any action before it's taken, giving users constant interactive and visual feedback as they work. "The real beauty of Aldus HomePublisher is that it makes it easy for everyone to look like a professional graphics designer at an affordable price," said Myers.
Other automated enhancements in Aldus HomePublisher include a new copy-fitting feature that automatically adjusts the font size and spacing of text to fit copy perfectly into a designated space. An AutoFlow feature automatically adds pages to a document to accommodate a complete story, regardless of length.
Aldus' Additions technology (first developed for Aldus PageMaker) has been incorporated into Aldus HomePublisher to extend the program's capabilities for specialized desktop-publishing tasks. These Additions save users time by making tricky jobs, such as creating enlarged and dropped capitals at the beginning of paragraphs, formatting bulleted text and making pull quotes (enlarged text embedded into surrounding text for emphasis) fast and automatic. The program will also be System 7 savvy, with support for Balloon Help, Apple events, Subscribe, TrueType, 32-bit addressing, virtual memory and QuickTime movies.
Aldus HomePublisher will import graphics in PICT (up to 24-bit color), TIFF(TM) (one to eight-bit gray scale), EPS, MacPaint, ThunderScan, and Aldus Digital Darkroom Archive file formats. It will import text files in many formats, including Microsoft Word or Works, MacWrite, ASCII (text only) and RTF.
