 ALDUS AND USERLAND DELIVER SCRIPTABLE PAGE LAYOUT;
 FRONTIER SCRIPT WRITERS CAN AUTOMATE PAGEMAKER 4.2
 PALO ALTO, Calif., March 3 /PRNewswire/ -- UserLand Software and Aldus Corp. (NASDAQ: ALDC) today jointly released a UserLand Frontier 1.0 "install file" that allows script writers to drive Aldus PageMaker version 4.2. Also included are a set of sample Frontier scripts and PageMaker templates that illustrate how PageMaker can be automated using Frontier.
 Frontier version 1.0, which shipped in January 1992, is the first scripting software that allows users to program the Macintosh operating system, file system, networks and Apple Event-compatible software. PageMaker's commands and queries are accessed by Frontier through PageMaker's support for two standard Apple Events: DOSC ("Do Script") and EVAL ("Evaluate"). The install file adds a set of Frontier "verbs" that make PageMaker operations a natural part of the Frontier language. Script writers can program more than 230 PageMaker operations, such as creating a new text block in the open publication window, opening or closing a window, or determining how many pages are in the current publication.
 "Using Frontier to power PageMaker enables experts and consultants to create desktop publishing utilities that can automate just about anything you do in PageMaker," said Paul Brainerd, president of Aldus Corp. "Tasks that used to require expertise in page layout can now be performed by people who don't have specialized design skills. By opening our page layout technology to customization by Frontier script writers, we can deliver the power of PageMaker to a much wider audience."
 "PageMaker is a very important milestone for us," said David M. Winer, president of UserLand Software. "It has the largest installed base of Macintosh page layout users and consultants. We hope to help grow that base. Aldus has done an exemplary job of opening their product to Frontier script writers."
 The PageMaker install file for Frontier is available immediately from UserLand's forum on CompuServe (GO USERLAND, Library 9); Aldus' forum on CompuServe (GO SBSALD, Library 6); or from either company's discussion board on the AppleLink electronic mail service, under the Third Parties icon. Interested parties are advised to visit one of these locations on a regular basis for updates to the install file.
 This announcement makes public a cooperative development effort that has been in progress at both companies for 10 months. In April 1991, developers from both companies met to determine how to connect both Frontier and PageMaker's support for the Apple Event protocol, part of Macintosh System 7. Once technical compatibility was implemented, UserLand turned to Tom Petaccia, a Macintosh consultant based in Charlotte, N.C., and an early user of Frontier, to create the install file released this week.
 Petaccia wrote several scripts to test the connection between PageMaker and Frontier. One script automates the production of business cards, allowing an operator to enter information into a Frontier dialog box. Another script assembles a product data sheet from an Excel spreadsheet, Microsoft Word document and an Aldus SuperPaint Encapsulated PostScript file.
 Both scripts are included in the install file package. Winer said, "Tom's work is a major confirmation of the theory of Frontier scripting. Scripting can turn applications like PageMaker 4.2 into development platforms, allowing power users and professionals to customize, automate and simplify the use of technically rich products like PageMaker."
