ALDUS ACQUIRES COLOR TRAPPING SOFTWARE TECHNOLOGY

ALDUS ACQUIRES COLOR TRAPPING SOFTWARE TECHNOLOGY
SEATTLE, July 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Aldus Corp. (NASDAQ: ALDC) today announced that it has acquired RipPrep, a software application that performs professional-quality, process-color trapping on color- conforming Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) files.
RipPrep and its underlying software technology have been developed by Graphic Edge Inc., a technology development company in Amherst, N.H. Aldus and Graphic Edge joined forces in September 1991 to create an affordable, professional-level color trapping solution that would run on a microcomputer. Their work resulted in the advanced trapping "engine" currently used in RipPrep. Graphic Edge first shipped a Microsoft Windows-based version of RipPrep to selected customers in May 1991.
Aldus plans to market RipPrep for Graphic Edge, while engineers from both companies apply a modified version of the trapping engine to an update that will be shipped as an Aldus product later this year.
"Our acquisition of this trapping technology is another example of our commitment to meeting the requirements of graphics professionals with cost-effective, performance-based prepress software," said Ranjit Mulgaonkar, business manager of the Aldus Prepress Products Group.
 WHAT IS TRAPPING?
Trapping is a process in color printing that eliminates "light leaks," a common problem of gaps or outlines between the color elements of a printed page. Such gaps are generally unacceptable in a professionally produced publication.
Slight paper movement on the press, misaligned printing plates, the characteristics of certain inks, humidity and other factors, together or alone, can cause a slight shift in the position of differently colored elements -- including text, illustrations and photographs -- of a layout that were designed to abut on the printed page. This shift, or misregistration, allows the color of the underlying paper stock to appear between the elements in the printed output.
In traditional trapping, printshop specialists photomechanically expand or contract an object's edges in minute increments to create a slight overlap of the inks for adjoining color elements of the film. The expansions (called spreads) and contractions (chokes) compensate for misregistration that might occur on the press, thus eliminating the chance for light leaks. RipPrep is designed to replicate these techniques through computer software.
 HOW RIPPREP WORKS
RipPrep applies spreads and chokes to color-conforming EPS files generated by PostScript-language layout and illustration applications such as Aldus FreeHand, PageMaker, QuarkXPress and Adobe Illustrator. The EPS files can originate from applications run on a variety of platforms, including Macintosh, UNIX and Windows. The program operates by translating the source PostScript file into a proprietary graphical format that enables automatic, detailed analysis of each color interaction on a page, regardless of its complexity. Then, RipPrep generates PostScript instructions that, when combined with the source file, produce precisely the desired spread or choke between each color. Graphic Edge has a patent application pending on this technology that Aldus will own as a result of the acquisition.
"Although the process RipPrep applies to trapping is sophisticated and unique, the trapping technology is easy to use," said Mulgaonkar. "The result is an accurate trap with minimal impact on output time. RipPrep's performance is exceptional, making it very suitable for a high-volume production environment."
The technology has been designed for use by PostScript service bureaus, prepress houses, commercial printers, in-plant print production departments and publishing operations.
 RIPPREP ADVANTAGES
RipPrep's trapping engine has an open system architecture. It will trap EPS files created with any combination of PostScript- generating applications on any computing platform. Pages with traps can be output to any PostScript-capable printer. Also, trapped EPS files prepared by RipPrep are portable to other platforms or applications for further processing. The product traps pages with any combination of PostScript text, line art, illustrations or scanned images. It will trap multiple and partially overlapping objects, as well as complex elements, such as gradations (called vignettes). No other software trapping solution offers this flexibility, according to Keith Deutsch, chief operating officer of Graphic Edge Inc. "RipPrep gives users the choice of trapping a page using default parameters or a full range of professional controls to specify custom settings," said Deutsch. "In either case, once the user has set the parameters or controls, trapping is automatic."
The program also supplies PostScript preview capabilities for reviewing a file, with zooming, panning and color-measurement tools for detailed inspection.
 PRICING AND AVAILABILITY
RipPrep 1.0 is now available to customers in the United States and Canada for $9,850(U.S.) directly from Aldus. For more information customers can contact Aldus Customer Services at 206-628-5739.
The company plans to update RipPrep's user interface and documentation and ship it as a new Aldus trapping product before the end of 1992. All registered users of RipPrep will receive a free update to the Aldus version. Localized versions for European and Pacific Rim markets will be announced later.
 SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
RipPrep requires Windows 3.0 or later. The recommended system configuration is a 486-based DOS-compatible computer, 16MB of RAM, a 200MB hard drive, a color monitor and a mouse.
