ALCOA ELECTRONIC PACKAGING ANNOUNCES COMPLETION OF SIMPLIFICATION
 OF ITS COMMERCIAL, MANUFACTURING AND ADMINISTRATIVE PROCESSES
 SAN DIEGO, Aug. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Alcoa Electronic Packaging Inc. (AEPI) today announced completion of a major simplification of its commercial, manufacturing and administrative processes. Begun in April 1992, the effort will reduce the time required to manufacture ceramic electronic packages from basic materials to finished product from 30 days to six days.
 As a result of the simplification effort, 115 engineering, technical and administrative personnel in San Diego are being laid off effective Sept. 3, 1992. This represents approximately 25 percent of the San Diego work force. The need for a layoff was announced to AEPI associates earlier. Today's announcement confirms the earlier communication. "We have sought to implement this reduction in our work force in as caring a manner as possible, through a comprehensive selection process utilizing input from our associates on their own career desires and previous experiences." According to AEPI President Kenneth W. Blevins, "this restructuring was necessary to increase our manufacturing capability while reducing costs. The improved cost will allow us to compare favorably with the best in the market.
 "The scope of all the jobs that remain increases, demanding greater accountability and flexibility from those associates in the jobs. Simplification of our processes will position us to implement technology more rapidly and improve our costs and efficiencies while maintaining a high level of customer service."
 The company will provide an extensive job search program to aid those associates affected in obtaining new employment. In addition, extended medical and life insurance coverage and other transition benefits will be provided. The Human Resources department has prepared a benefits program that provides specific information for each associate. Those affected will receive equitable severance pay commensurate with length of service.
 AEPI has retained Drake Beam Morin, one of the nation's top re- employment assistance firms. They have developed a support program for those associates who will lose their jobs. Among the services they will provide are:
 -- Outplacement workshops to provide assistance and training on
 resume preparation, interviewing techniques and job search
 strategies;
 -- Typing and printing of resumes; and
 -- A Career Center to provide basic clerical assistance and a job
 search library.
 AEPI will seek to identify openings in other companies and it will advertise the professional skills available to other potential employers in San Diego.
