ALCOA CERTIFIES FOUR SUPPLIERS ON QUALITY
PITTSBURGH, Dec. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Alcoa (NYSE: AA) has

certified, for the first time, suppliers for implementing systems that result in higher quality products being supplied to the company, it was announced today.
The certification is part of the Alcoa Supplier Quality Improvement Process (ASQIP) instituted in July 1990 when 40 high volume suppliers of products critical to the company's production processes were invited to participate in the program.
The first four suppliers certified are: Elkem Metals Company, Alloy, W.Va., a supplier of silicon metal for alloying; Nalco Chemical Company, Chicago, a supplier of lubricants for rolling aluminum; PPG Industries, Inc., Circleville, Ohio, a supplier of coatings for aluminum sheet used to make cans; and RMI Company, Niles, Ohio, a supplier of titanium billet.
In the certification process, a quality consultant from Alcoa helps, without charge, participating suppliers develop and implement quality systems in their operations. Subsequently, the systems are audited by and Alcoa team consisting of the consultant and three representatives of the plant that uses the product or service.
Suppliers may attain one of three levels of certification: Certified Supplier; Preferred Supplier, the next higher designation; and Supplier of Excellence, the highest designation. In the certifications announced today, Elkem Metals and Nalco Chemical were named Suppliers of Excellence; PPG Industries and RMI Company were named Preferred Suppliers.
Alcoa is the world's largest aluminum producer and is headquartered in Pittsburgh. The company has 148 operating and sales locations in 20 countries with 63,500 employees.
