ALCO INTERNATIONAL GROUP ANNOUNCES RESULTS FROM
CLINICAL TESTS OF ITS BARRIER INTEGRITY MONITOR
SAN DIEGO, Aug. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Alco International Group Inc. ("Alco") (NASDAQ: ALIG), through its wholly owned subsidiary InCoMed Inc., today announced the results from clinical tests of its Barrier Integrity Monitor (BIM(TM)) used to detect breaches in surgical gloves and gowns. The BIM, to be commercially distributed commencing in September of 1992, is an electronic device that detects fluid bridges between health-care personnel and patients, thereby decreasing the risk for transmission of fluid-borne infectious agents.
Between July 24 and Aug. 14, the BIM was tested in operating rooms of four different hospitals in California, Texas and New Hampshire. In 20 different operations covering a broad range of surgical procedures, BIM systems were used for a total of 26 hours of operating time. During this time, 49 glove failures and four gown failures were noted, all of which were detected by the BIM. Among the 20 operations monitored, none were completed without at least one glove failure. The average duration of the operation was one hour and 21 minutes and the average number of glove failures was 2.45 -- this is equivalent to one glove failure every 33 minutes, on the average. Response to the results obtained with the BIM system, from operating-room personnel was highly positive; more than 95 percent of the staff interviewed indicated the intent to using the BIM when it becomes commercially available.
According to Alco President Dr. Dietmar Rabussay, "The tests results and the response from health care workers confirm results obtained with the BIM system in tests earlier this year and corroborate the market potential of this product. We expect similar results and excitement from the on-going tests of the BIM system at several other hospitals across the country."
In addition, InCoMed announced an agreement with Off Shore Factories Inc., a U.S. subsidiary of Grupo Bustamante of Mexico. The disposable products related to the BIM will be manufactured at one of the Maquiladora facilities owned by Grupo Bustamante corporation and will be delivered to InCoMed's 10,000-square-foot-warehouse in Otay Mesa for distribution to hospitals throughout the United States and Canada.
InCoMed also announced it has engaged Doctor Design Inc. of San Diego to oversee the final assembly and quality control of the BIM, as well as to develop engineering modifications for future generations of the BIM system.
On Aug. 19, 1992, the company filed its Quarterly Report on Form 10-Q for the period ended June 30, 1992, copies of which are available from the Securities and Exchange Commission,
Alco, through its subsidiaries, operates two primary businesses: the marketing of medical products for infection control and for women's health; and the transportation of containerized cargo from South Florida to the Caribbean.
