ALCO ESTABLISHES CANADIAN PAPER DISTRIBUTION NETWORK
VALLEY FORGE, Pa., Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Alco Standard

Corporation (NYSE: ASN) reported today that the acquisitions of the assets of five paper distribution companies, announced earlier this year, have been completed.
Annualized revenues for the acquired companies are expected to approach U.S. $1 billion.
 The acquired companies are:
Barber-Ellis Fine Papers Printing papers to commercial printers
 Richmond, British Columbia and end-users
Crown Paper Retail and product packaging,
Vancouver, British Columbia janitorial supplies and systems, food
 service products, educational
 supplies, specialty and reprographic
 papers for business and industry
Inter City Papers Printing papers to commercial printers
LaSalle, Quebec and reprographic papers to business
 and industry
Price Daxion Industrial products to food service,
Mississauga, Ontario food stores, wholesale and retail
 markets, and industrial companies
Whitaker Carpenter Paper Printing papers to commercial printers
Elk Grove Village, Ill. and forms manufacturers
Four of these companies -- Barber-Ellis Fine Papers, Crown Paper, Inter City Papers and Price Daxion -- together with Smith Paper, will form the nucleus of a new paper distribution network, Unisource Canada. Smith Paper of Burnaby, British Columbia, acquired by Alco in 1990, is primarily a distributor of industrial products.
Unisource Canada, with 56 locations and over 2,000 employees, will be divided into two regions with Yves Montmarquette as President of the Eastern Region and Donald C. Cook as President of the Western Region. Both will report directly to Raymond A. Peterson, President of Paper Corporation of America (PCA), Alco's largest operating group. Formerly, Montmarquette was President, Printing Papers Division of Abitibi Price; Cook was Vice President and General Manager of Crown Paper.
The fifth company, Whitaker Carpenter Paper, will become part of PCA's Central Region under the leadership of William T. Leith, President.
In announcing these acquisitions, Ray B. Mundt, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Alco Standard, said, "The addition of these fine companies to the Alco family and the formation of Unisource Canada create a strong, professionally managed North American network of paper and industrial product distributors dedicated to growth and outstanding customer service. The creation of Unisource Canada will provide expanded career opportunities for the employees of these companies and will contribute to the future growth of the Canadian economy. We are extremely excited about the contributions which these new companies will make to Alco's growth and success in the years ahead."
Alco Standard Corporation, headquartered in Valley Forge, is a publicly owned distribution and services company. For its fiscal year ended Sept. 30, 1991, revenues were $4.8 billion.
