ALCATEL, SUN IN SOFTWARE PACT FOR CONSUMER NET DEVICES.

Alcatel and Sun Microsystems Inc this week announced plans to work together to develop software for consumer internet devices. The two companies said the partnership was based on their desire to "stimulate the market for internet appliances," and as part of the alliance Sun said it was supporting Alcatel with the launch of its first Java-based screen phone next year. Karen Peck, director of marketing for Alcatel said the two companies had worked together to develop a customized implementation of a full suite of Java technologies based on Sun's JavaOS for Consumers. The product provides complete support for the PersonalJava API as well as an integrated Java browser with support for JavaScript technology. "There will be joint development now and going forward, but not on the hardware side." she said. She added that the two would work together on future versions of the screen phone.
