ALBERT J. TORTORELLA ELECTED SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT AT UST INC.

 GREENWICH, Conn., Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Albert J. Tortorella, former vice chairman of Burson-Marsteller, one of the world's largest public relations agencies, has been elected a senior vice president of UST Inc. (NYSE: UST). He will join the company on Monday, Jan. 17.
 As a senior vice president at UST Inc., Mr. Tortorella will be responsible for the company's communications programs which include media relations, public relations and all corporate communications programs. He will report to Robert E. Barrett, executive vice president. Prior to joining UST Inc., Mr. Tortorella spent 15 years at Burson-Marsteller, the last three as vice chairman.
 "Al brings to UST a specialized knowledge of public affairs and issue management experience as well as tobacco industry know-how. His expertise in these diverse and critical areas will serve UST well in an ever changing environment," said Vincent A. Gierer Jr., chairman and CEO.
 During his tenure at Burson-Marsteller, he advised corporate America's largest companies in dealing with sensitive public issues.
 Companies that Mr. Tortorella has represented include AT&T, Bank of America, Coca-Cola, General Electric, Johnson & Johnson, Levi Strauss, Perrier and Union Carbide.
 Mr. Tortorella is a member of the board of directors of Just Say No International, Oakland, Calif. and is a visiting lecturer at the Kellogg Graduate School of management, Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill. He and his wife Karen reside in Fairfield County, Conn.
 Through its subsidiaries, UST Inc. is a leading producer and marketer of moist smokeless tobacco products including Copenhagen, Skoal, Skoal Long Cut and Skoal Bandits.
