ALASKANS CAN NOW ACCESS FREE FAA ON-LINE WEATHER INFORMATION
WASHINGTON, Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Alaskans can now use their personal computers to access a free up-to-the-minute weather service which is sponsored by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Called GTE Contel DUATS, an acronym for Direct User Access Terminal Service, it allows pilots to receive weather briefings on their home computer through a modem and a regular telephone line. The service is provided by GTE Government Systems Corp., Federal Systems Division, under a contract from the FAA.
Although DUATS is primarily provided for pilots, anyone can use it. The service to Alaska is expected to be expanded soon to allow pilots to file flight plans for trips within the state and later for trips to the lower 48 states.
 Special software is not required.
Special computer software is not required to access and use the free Contel DUATS system. Any communications software normally used with a modem will work. Even the phone call is free, the service may be accessed by computer on 800-767-9989.
Official weather information is presented on DUATS in standard aviation abbreviated form. Plain language weather briefings are also offered on the Contel DUATS menu at no charge. Virtually all weather types are translated into plain language, including observations, area forecasts, radar summaries, SIGMETs (Significant Meteorological Event), and NOTAMs (Notice to Airmen).
Normal sessions are 20-minutes long and can be restarted from the keyboard without redialing.
Users requiring assistance with the service may obtain help by calling a toll-free telephone voice line 800-345-3828. The help line is staffed 24-hours-a-day, every day of the year.
 Optional weather graphics available.
Optional aviation related services are available on DUATS for a nominal charge. These special pay-per-view services include color weather graphics and computerized flight planning and filing services. Free software is required for access to the weather graphics which may be obtained by calling the voice help line.
