ALASKA AIRLINES RESTRUCTURES AIRCRAFT ORDER

 ALASKA AIRLINES RESTRUCTURES AIRCRAFT ORDER
SEATTLE, Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Alaska Airlines (NYSE: ALK; PSE)

announced today it is restructuring its aircraft equipment order with McDonnell Douglas (NYSE: MD) from 20 to 10 MD-90 airplanes.
The airline will add six MD-80s to be delivered in 1994 and 1995 and has the option to have McDonnell Douglas remarket three MD-80s now in the airline's fleet. Deliveries of the other 10 MD-90s will not begin until December 1996. The airline will retain options for an additional 20 MD-90s.
The revised order is part of a broader capital-spending reduction plan the airline unveiled in June to cut about $500 million over the next five years.
"This decision is a result of the economy's prolonged slump and the poor prospects for profitability in the near term," said Ray Vingo, chief financial officer. "In this climate we must reduce our long-term capital spending commitments."
Alaska Airlines, which began flying Douglas aircraft in the 1940s, currently operates 38 MD-80s.
