ALASKA AIR GROUP POSTS RECORD AUGUST TRAFFIC
SEATTLE, Sept. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Alaska Air Group, Inc. (NYSE: ALK; PSE) reported today August passenger traffic volumes for its subsidiaries, Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air.
Alaska Airlines' August traffic set a record monthly high of 663.6 million revenue passenger miles (RPMs), a 3 percent increase from the 645.5 million flown last year. The passenger load factor (the percentage of available seats occupied by fare paying passengers) was 67.5 percent, compared to the 69.2 percent in August 1992. Capacity during August was 982.5 million available seat miles (ASMs), 5 percent higher than last year's 933.2 million. The airline carried 760,300 passengers in August compared to 722,700 in August 1992. For the eight months ended August 1993, revenue passenger miles totaled 3.544 billion, a 10 percent decrease from the 3.948 billion recorded a year earlier. The passenger load factor for the eight months ended August 1993 was 57.2 percent, down from the 59.1 percent for the prior year. Capacity for the eight months ended August 1993, decreased 7 percent to 6.191 billion, down from 6.675 billion in 1992. The airline carried 4,069,000 passengers, compared to 4,419,000 in 1992.
Horizon Air's August traffic also set a record monthly high of 58.2 million RPMs, a 14 percent gain from the 51.0 million flown last year. The passenger load factor was 63.4 percent, compared to 62.8 percent recorded in August 1992. The airline carried 288,153 passengers in August, a 16 percent increase from the 248,949 carried in August 1992. Capacity was 91.8 million ASMs, 13 percent higher than last yearUs 81.1 million. For the eight months ended August 1993, RPMs totaled 356.1 million, an 11 percent increase from the 321.0 million recorded a year earlier. The passenger load factor was 55.4 percent, compared to 53.5 percent for 1992. Capacity (ASMs) for the eight months ended August 1993 increased 7 percent to 642.9 million, up from 599.9 million flown in 1992.
