ALAMO INSTALLS LARGEST NEW COMPUTER FROM IBM TO EXPAND SERVICES
AND MEET PROJECTED GROWTH DEMAND IN 1992
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Nov. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Alamo Rent a Car announced today that it has completed installation of IBM's newest and largest computer -- the ES9000 Model 900 -- in preparation for expansion of key services and to handle the record volume of transactions projected by Alamo for the remainder of 1991 and 1992.
According to Tom Loane, Alamo vice president of computers and communications, "The new IBM mainframe will enable Alamo to meet the demands of rapid growth and expand time-saving services like Alamo Express Return to more locations in 1992. Our primary objective is to maintain the high quality and speed of service that Alamo customers have come to expect, such as very fast response time in our reservations centers and check-in and out times that have increased efficiency in our rental locations.
"Alamo's expansion into new markets and moves on-airport have caused a substantial increase in volume, making the purchase of a larger computer system inevitable," added Loane.
Among its expansion of services, Alamo expects that more than five million customers will be utilizing the company's unique "Instant Alamo" database system which stores pertinent rental information on file, eliminating the need for repeating information on arrival at each rental. First-time customers are automatically enrolled with their first rental.
Further, Alamo introduced "Express Return" in early 1991 to provide curbside receipts in seconds to renters returning cars. The service is currently available in 35 of Alamo's 97 high-volume locations serving 50 percent of Alamo's customers. Expansion to 80 percent of Alamo's renters will take place in 1992.
Alamo is the largest independently owned and operated car rental firm, currently serving 97 of the most popular U.S. travel destinations and through its London-based affiliated company, Guy Salmon Service, Ltd., operates 21 locations in England and Scotland.
