ALAMO ANNOUNCES IMMEDIATE CHANGEOVER TO GENERIC PLATES IN SOUTH FLORIDA AFTER RECEIVING NOD FROM DMV

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., April 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Alamo Rent A Car announced today that it has received authorization from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles that will enable Florida's car rental firms to proceed immediately today with a full- scale changeover from "Y" to "Z" lease-designated license plates to so- called generic plates that do not specifically identify these cars as rental cars.
Alamo yesterday got the nod from the Florida DMV that will allow the company to re-plate any care in its Florida fleet with any generic plate on a random basis. This will enable Alamo and other Florida car rental firms to speed up the process of changing over the license plates in their Florida fleets, because they will not be required to match up thousands of newly issued license plates with thousands of rental cars whose whereabouts at any given time may be unknown and are constantly changing.
As a result, Alamo began this morning the changeover to generic plates at its Miami and Fort Lauderdale Rental Plazas (sm), a move that will result in about 1,000 changeovers a day once the operation is up and running in the next 24 hours. Alamo has pledged that it will assign manpower and contract for additional labor in order to get the changeover program expedited.
After the changeover operation is complete in Miami and Fort Lauderdale, Alamo will move northward to complete the changeover operation is complete in Miami and Fort Lauderdale, Alamo will move northward to complete the changeover process to ensure that its 20,000- car South Florida fleet is changed over as soon as is logistically possible. The company announced that all new car deliveries that it accepts for the summer season will automatically be plated with generic plates.
Alamo First To Issue Warnings To Tourists
Yesterday, Alamo became the first car rental firm to issue written warnings and provide verbal announcements over its public address system to arriving customers. For nearly a year, Alamo had been providing customers with a "safety brochure" that it produced in collaboration with the City of Miami Police Department, The Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce and other car rental companies.
Effective 6 p.m. on April 5, Alamo began distributing its own flyer entitled "A Warning To Our Valued Customers" that provides all Alamo renters in Miami with specific information regarding the ploys used by certain criminals against tourists and Miami citizens, and providing specific suggestions renters can use to protect themselves. The company is also utilizing its public address system to announce to renters awaiting their rental transaction that important safety information is being provided and should be reviewed before they leave the facility.
Today, Alamo has installed large posters in its Miami facilities and counter cards at every rental agent position that carry the specific warnings for tourists. The company is expanding this public information service to all of its 17 Florida locations within the next 48 hours. Alamo is also producing the exact information in German, Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese.
Since 1990, Alamo has provided its arriving international customers with a special publication in English, German, Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese that provides helpful highway tips and other information for U.S. excursions.
Alamo Committed To Sticker-Free Policy In Florida
Alamo implemented a "sticker-free" car rental policy at all 17 of its Florida locations in March, and the company has been working to remove both the bumper stickers and front ID license plates from its entire Florida fleet, a process the company expects to complete as soon as every car rented in March has been returned. The following additional facts are provided:
-- Alamo has been in compliance with the Dade County Ordinance
regarding the removal of rental car bumper stickers and front
license ID plates since it was passed in September 1991.
-- Six weeks ago Alamo mandated the removal of all such bumper
stickers and front license ID plates from its entire Florida car
rental fleet. This process has continued and will continue until
all stickers and plates are removed.
-- The car that was rented by German tourist Barbara Jensen was
rented in Fort Myers and returned to Miami by another customer
that evening. It was prepped, fueled and its rear bumper sticker
removed on the Alamo lot by a service agent assigned to this
task. Due to human error, the front ID plate was not removed.
The company confirms that this was an isolated oversight.
-- Effective Sunday, April 4, we issued an internal mandate to put
additional personnel onto this assignment to ensure that
unequivocally no Alamo car currently rented out of any Alamo
Florida location will have a rear bumper sticker or front ID
 plate.
