ALAGASCO PROFILED IN 100 BEST COMPANIES TO WORK FOR BOOK

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Alagasco, the largest subsidiary of Energen Corporation (NYSE: EGN), is receiving nationwide recognition today by being listed in the just released The 100 Best Companies To Work For In America, according to Rex J. Lysinger, chief executive officer of Energen.
"We have a great group of employees at this company who have worked

together to make this recognition possible," Lysinger said. "As the state's largest natural gas utility, we are excited about being one of the oldest companies in the book."
Alagasco was also recognized as one of the best companies for job security and one of the most strongly unionized.
Quoting from the book, "Mike Warren was sure of one thing when he became Alagasco's president in 1984. He knew that Alagasco did not deserve to be in the first edition of The 100 Best Companies To Work For In America. He was convinced, however, that with a lot of work the company could make it into this edition. So he made that a corporate goal of the utility that provides natural gas to Birmingham, Montgomery and other towns in central Alabama."
"To say we are excited about being mentioned in the book is an understatement," said Alagasco President Mike Warren. "We have been trying to become a part of this book since 1986." Warren also said that becoming one of the 100 best companies had been a part of the corporate strategic plan since 1988.
Co-author Robert Levering visited Alagasco twice to interview employees about the possibility of being included in the book. His first visit to Alagasco was in 1988, and his follow-up visit was in 1990.
"Alagasco was unique in that it was the only company to our knowledge that explicitly made getting into our book a corporate goal," Levering said. "They did it by undergoing a complete cultural transformation in the last few years that has been remarkable. It's an inspiring story that we hope other companies will emulate."
Innovative programs at Alagasco that, according to Levering, made the company one of the 100 best include the "Hey, Mike" program, which is an employee suggestion program; the annual PRIDE celebration, which is an annual employee picnic; and the company's infatuation with stamping out dinosaur thinking, or encouraging new ways of doing old jobs.
"This is an honor in which every employee had a hand in achieving," Warren said. "Getting in the book was an important motivational tool for us. It helped us become a different and better company. Concentrating on employees and learning from them are keys to business success. That is what being recognized in the book is all about."
The third edition of The 100 Best Companies To Work For In America is available in local bookstores. Publisher of the book is Currency/Doubleday of New York.
Alagasco, with headquarters in Birmingham, has natural gas operations in six outlying districts: Gadsden, Anniston, Tuscaloosa, Montgomery, Selma and Opelika. The company serves approximately 420,000 customers. Alagasco is a subsidiary of Energen Corporation, a diversified energy holding company.
