AKERSON RESIGNS FROM CRAY RESEARCH BOARD

 EAGAN, Minn., Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Daniel F. Akerson, newly named chief executive officer of General Instruments Corporation, has resigned from Cray Research's (NYSE: CYR) board of directors, it was announced today by John F. Carlson, Cray Research chairman and chief executive officer.
 According to Carlson, Akerson resigned to devote his full time and attention to his new role as head of General Instrument Corporation and general partner at the investment banking firm of Forstmann Little & Co. Akerson has been a member of Cray's board since September 1992. Prior to his affiliation with General Instrument, Akerson was president and chief operating officer of MCI Communications Corp.
 "Dan has been a strong contributor since his first day on the board. We have enjoyed substantial benefit from Dan's participation and we're sorry to lose his future counsel and advice," Carlson said.
 Carlson said the board vacancy would be filled by another outside director.
