AJHM based CPE questionnaire.

The AJHM based CPE questionnaire system is a voluntary system designed to assist members in the accumulation of NHAA CPE points. Questions are divided into the appropriate subject categories (herbal medicine and medical science) and each question refers to an article in this issue of the Australian Journal of Herbal Medicine. Points accumulated through completion of these questions should be recorded in the NHAA CPE diary. Each completed question is worth one mark in the relevant category. Your completed CPE diary should be returned with your membership renewal at the end of the calendar year. For further information please see the NHAA CPE Member's Manual on the NHAA website www.nhaa.org.au.

1. The study comparing Klimadynon (Cimififuga racemosa) with clomiphene citrate concluded that:

a) Klimadynon treatment resulted in a significant increase in FSH and LH/FSH ratio and increased endometrial thickness

b) Klimadynon treatment resulted in a significant reduction in FSH and LH/FSH ratio and increased endometrial thickness

c) Klimadynon treatment resulted in a significant reduction in LH, LH/FSH ratio and progesterone levels

d) Klimadynon treatment resulted in a significant increase in LH, LH/FSH ratio and progesterone levels

2. With reference to the study investigating shatavari and anxiety-like behaviours, which of the following statements is true:

a) Both MAR-50 and MAR-100 demonstrated anxiolytic effects comparable to the DZ-1.0 group in the tested behavioural performances

b) MAR (100 and 200 mg/kg) enhanced the level of amygdalar serotonin and norepinephrine and also reduced the expression of 5-HT2A receptors in the amygdala

c) Flumazenil, a GABAA antagonist, was found to attenuate the anxiolytic effect of MAR (100mg/kg) and DZ (1.0mg/kg) indicating a GABAA mediated mechanism of MAR

d) MAR demonstrated anxiolytic effects in a dose-dependant manner

3. Regarding the study investigating valerian in preventing early postoperative cognitive dysfunction after CABG surgery, which of the following statements is correct:

a) Baseline demographic and clinical characteristics of the patients were similar, with no significant differences in surgery factors, such as duration of operation, which may have influenced the internal validity of the results

b) Administration of 530mg V officinalis root extract, or placebo capsule, every 24 hours commenced 1 day before the surgery and continued 60 days after the surgery

c) A significantly lower incidence of cognitive dysfunction was observed in the valerian group compared to the placebo group at 10 days after CABG surgery

d) The valerian and placebo groups experienced similar improvement in their cognitive function during the 8 weeks after CABG

4. With reference to the study comparing Cimicifuga racemosa (iCR) with tibolone in Chinese women with menopausal symptoms, which of the following statements is incorrect:

a) Patients were allocated to receive either tibolone 2.5mg/ day orally or the iCR extract corresponding to 40mg crude drug/day for 12 weeks

b) Within the iCR group, 70.1% of women experienced a decrease in myoma volume, with an average decline of 30.3% after 12 weeks of treatment

c) A decrease in myoma volume was observed in 35.7% of the tibolone group, with the average myoma volume increasing by 4.7% after 12 weeks

d) There was no significant difference in fibroid size at the onset of treatment between groups

5. With reference to the article on valerian as a preventative treatment for postoperative cognitive dysfunction, which of the following statements is incorrect:

a) Inflammation, sleep disruption and increased levels of acetylcholine (ACh) and serotonin (5-HT) neurotransmitters have been associated with postoperative cognitive dysfunction

b) Valerian has demonstrated anti-inflammatory actions, stimulatory effects on 5-HT and Ach receptors, and reduction of sleep-disturbance

c) A lower incidence of cognitive dysfunction was observed in the valerian group compared to the placebo group at 10 days after CABG surgery

d) The valerian group experienced greater improvement in their cognitive function during the 8 weeks after CABG when compared to the placebo group

1. Based on the study investigating the association between antibiotics and early childhood obesity, which of the following statements is false:

a) The prevalence of obesity for all children was 10% at 2 years of age, 14% at 3 years, and 15% at 4 years

b) Antibiotics were the most commonly prescribed medications at ages 0 to 23 months with 69% of children exposed

c) An increased risk of childhood obesity was observed with greater antibiotic use when examining all antibiotics

d) No significant association was observed between obesity and broad-spectrum drugs

2. With reference to the study investigating sulforaphane treatment in autism spectrum disorder, which of the following statements is incorrect:

a) Sulforaphane up-regulate genes that influence an aerobic cell's ability to protect against oxidative stress, inflammation, DNA-damaging electrophiles, and radiation

b) After 18 weeks, there was a significant 34% reduction in ABC and a 17% reduction in SRS scores in the treatment group, whereas the placebo group experienced minimal change

c) More participants in the sulforaphane group displayed improvements in the social interaction, abnormal behaviour, and verbal communication CGI-I parameters

d) Upon discontinuation of the treatment, scores remained significantly different in the sulforaphane group at week 22

3. Regarding the study investigating B vitamins as an adjunct to antidepressant therapy, which of the following statements is correct:

a) Intention to treat analysis found that more people treated with vitamins than placebo experienced remission over 26 and 52 weeks

b) The odds of remission were significantly reduced in the vitamin group at weeks 12, 26 and 52

c) Participants in the vitamin group who had achieved remission of symptoms by week 12 had a significantly lower relapse rate

d) Participants in the lowest 50th percentile of tHcy experienced greater odds of remission of symptoms over 52 weeks in the vitamins group
