AJCongress Says Barak Victory Resulted from Desire of People of Israel for Change and Accelerated Peace Process.

NEW YORK, May 17 /PRNewswire/ -- AJCongress President Jack Rosen and Executive Director Phil Baum issued the following statement today following the election of Ehud Barak as Prime Minister of Israel:

Ehud Barak's resounding victory in today's national elections reflects the intense desire on the part of the people of Israel for change and for an accelerated pace in the peace negotiations.

The American Jewish Congress offers its congratulations and support to the Prime Minister-Elect and looks forward to ever-deepening ties between the Jewish people around the world and the people of Israel.

We acknowledge Prime Minister Netanyahu's role in helping to bring about acceptance of the Wye Accord by the people of Israel and thus advancing the prospects and possibility for peace in the region.

The people of Israel have spoken. Israel's democracy, as tempestuous and unwieldy as it often seems, provides the only example of a democratically elected government in the Middle East, and is in itself a cause for celebration.

It has been said that the recent danger to Israel has been as great from internal division as from external threat. We hope that period is over. Now that the passions inevitably associated with the election process subside, it is to be hoped that the people of Israel will heal their differences and come together to forge a future marked by achievement and progress. It is our confident expectation that under the leadership of Ehud Barak, a military hero in the model of Yitzhak Rabin, Israel will proceed firmly in that direction.
