AIRTRAN ANNOUNCES PAYMENT DELAY

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL, July 13 /PRNewswire/ -- After making a $5.4 million delayed payment to Mesaba Airlines on July 8, Northwest Airlines missed a scheduled $5.9 million payment due July 12, 1993. The payments are required under the Airline Services Agreement between Northwest and Mesaba, a wholly owned subsidiary of AirTran Corporation (NASDAQ: ATCC). Under the Airline Services Agreement, substantially all of Mesaba's revenues are collected by Northwest and remitted to Mesaba by Northwest on a semi-monthly basis based on traffic reports. The agreement provides for a 10-day grace period from the date the payment is due. Northwest has provided Mesaba written notice of its intent to pay all amounts that were due as of July 12 on July 22, 1993, the expiration of the 10-day grace period.
Mesaba is a regional airline providing scheduled passenger service to 47 cities in metropolitan areas in Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia and the Province of Ontario, Canada, under the name "Mesaba/Northwest Airlink." Mesaba currently offers a total of approximately 2,300 scheduled departures per week and has a route system with scheduled service totalling approximately 259,000 miles per week. Currently, approximately 81 percent of all Mesaba's passengers connect with Northwest flights either at Minneapolis/St. Paul or Detroit.
