AIRLIFT MARYLAND STYLE SET FOR MAY 17 AT MARTIN STATE AIRPORT

AIRLIFT MARYLAND STYLE SET FOR MAY 17 AT MARTIN STATE AIRPORT
On Sunday, May 17, media are invited to witness a spectacular airlift -- when two, 1950 vintage B-57 Canberras return home to their birthplace at Martin State Airport in Maryland.
What makes this airlift unique is that the B-57s will be transported by helicopters (Boeing Chinooks) specially designed to lift heavy bulk loads. Originally built by the Glenn L. Martin Company, Middle River, Md., these historical bombers, which saw action in the Vietnam War, will return to where they were first built for some restoration and refurbishing by the Glenn L. Martin Aviation Museum.
The homecoming will take place at Strawberry Point at Martin State Airport between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. A boxed lunch and other refreshments will be provided for invited guests and the media.
"We're hoping," said Gene DiGennaro, treasurer of the Glenn L. Martin Aviation Museum, "to have at least one of these jet bombers ready and on display for the public at the upcoming air show at Martin State Airport, the first weekend in October."
For access information, call DiGennaro after 6 p.m. at 301-282-5203. During the day, call the Administrative Office, Mary Ellen August, 301-682-8800, at Martin State Airport.
This event is not open to the public.
CONTACT: Gene DiGennaro, treasurer of the Glenn L. Martin Aviation Museum, 301-993-6912, or Linda Greene of BWI Airport, 301-859-7027.
