AIRCO GASES TO ADD JUST-IN-TIME CYLINDER DISTRIBUTION CENTER

MURRAY HILL, N.J., June 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Airco Gases, the U.S. gases business of The BOC Group, has begun construction of a new distribution center to provide "Just-In-Time" (JIT) delivery of cylinder products to electronics customers in the north Texas region.
The JIT Distribution Center also will house one of Airco Gases' Hazardous Incident Response Teams, and is expected to begin operations in October. The center will operate on two acres in the southwest portion of the company's recently opened $21 million, air separation facility located in Terrell, Texas, 20 miles east of Dallas.
"Just-In-Time delivery optimizes the entire distribution system," says Paul A. Lorance, project manager in Airco's Distributor and Cylinder Gases engineering department. Airco utilizes a gas management system that assesses historical information about deliveries made to each customer, and projects each customer's specific product needs. Airco then stocks products accordingly in its own storage center -- in this case, at the Terrell facility. The facility also will provide refrigerated storage capability for critical products such as diborane mixtures.
"This system has numerous benefits for our customers," says Lorance. First, it reduces cylinder inventory costs, because JIT delivery eliminates the need for the client to buffer -- or order extra -- inventory and keep it on their property. JIT cylinder delivery also creates savings for those companies that would otherwise have to implement higher levels of safety and environmental programs to comply with those state and federal regulations required when storing larger amounts of certain materials.
"In short," says Lorance, "JIT tightens up the whole cylinder supply scheme. It's part of Airco Gases Total Quality commitment to create innovative, effective ways to serve all of its electronics customers."
Airco is a member of The BOC Group, the worldwide industrial gases, health care, vacuum technology and distribution services company operating in more than 60 countries and with sales last year of $5.2 billion.
