AIRBUS INDUSTRIE UNVEILS ITS FIRST AIRCRAFT ASSEMBLED IN GERMANY

HAMBURG, Germany, March 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Airbus Industrie's new A321 standard-body, twin-engine aircraft, a stretched version of the A320, was officially presented today in Hamburg.
The A321 is the first Airbus aircraft to undergo final assembly in Germany. Final assembly lines, including interior furnishing, are fully integrated at one single location for all new aircraft, with the A321 based in Hamburg and the A330/A340 in Toulouse, France.
The A321 is the first large civil aircraft assembled in Germany since World War II. It represents the first participation in an Airbus program by associate member Alenia of Italy, and for the first time the manufacture of skin panels for one of the fuselage sections by subcontractor Kawasaki Heavy Industries of Japan.
Total development costs of approximately $480 million were financed on the open market.
The A321 shares maximum commonality with the A320, including the wide cabin, optional containerized baggage/cargo system and flight deck. It was developed following a "minimum change" design concept, extending the basic version A320 fuselage by 273 inches. As a result, modifications to establish single-aisle series production are limited, and relate largely to the additional fuselage "plugs" forward and aft of the wing, as well as structural reinforcement of certain areas and modified flaps.
With a full passenger load, the A321 can fly up to 2,350 nautical miles. It has 24 percent more seats and 40 percent more underfloor hold volume than the 150-seat A320. It is perfectly suited for high- density regional routes with a combination of low cost and high revenue potential.
After its first flight in mid-March, the A321 will enter a flight test program, ultimately with four aircraft, of some 750 hours. Certification for the International Aero Engines (IAE) V2530-A5 equipped version is expected in December. The CFM56-5B powered version should be certified in February 1994. As with all Airbus aircraft, the certification process will be undertaken in Toulouse. Once the A321 enters service, the aircraft will be delivered directly to airlines by Airbus Industrie in Hamburg.
First delivery of the IAE-powered A321, to Lufthansa German Airlines, is scheduled for January 1994. Alitalia will receive the first CFM-powered version two months later.
Since the start of final assembly of the first A321 last June, work has begun on three other A321s at the new Deutsche Aerospace Airbus Otto Lilienthal facility in Hamburg.
By mid-February, the combined A320-A321 program had accumulated 810 firm orders from 38 customers, including firm orders for 153 A321s. Additionally, Airbus Industrie has won six firm orders for its yet-to-be-launched A319, the 124-seat shortened version of the A320.
Airbus Industrie is a consortium of Europe's leading aerospace companies including Aerospatiale of France, Deutsche Aerospace Airbus of Germany, British Aerospace and CASA of Spain.
