AIRBUS INDUSTRIE PRESENTS THE A330 TO THE WORLD
WASHINGTON, Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Airbus Industrie today

introduced the latest addition to its comprehensive family of large civil aircraft with the official presentation in Toulouse of the new generation A330 widebody twin.
Drawing on Airbus Industrie's unrivaled experience in the manufacture and in-service support of twin-engine widebody aircraft, combined with its proven leadership in advanced on-board technologies, the A330 has been designed to offer maximum flexibility on a wide variety of route structures. Available with three different engine types, the aircraft's cost-efficient payload range covers everything from high-density, short-haul domestic "hops" to medium-to-long range international services stretching as far as 4,650 nautical miles.
Reflecting the diversity of its operational patterns, the spacious A330 cabin offers a wide choice of seating configurations, enabling airlines to meet the needs of different markets with consistently high levels of passenger comfort. For medium-to-long haul international services, the aircraft will carry 335 passengers in two classes or 295 passengers in three classes. For high density operations, the A330 can carry up to 440 passengers in a single class layout.
The A330 follows its four-engine ultra-long range counterpart, the A340, currently in the final stages of flight test and due to enter scheduled airline service early next year. Together the A330 and A340 offer the highest levels of commonality between types, optimized for different market requirements yet incorporating virtually identical structural design. They also feature the proven advanced fly-by-wire control technology originally developed under the A320 program -- also being featured on the A321 standard-body stretch, due to enter service in 1994.
With first flight of the A330 scheduled for early November, the A330 will subsequently enter a one-year flight test program leading to certification in October 1993 and first delivery, to French domestic carrier Air Inter, in November 1993.
The theme of today's "roll-out" reflected the family concept of the Airbus Industrie product line and featured a rare fly-past by each member of the existing aircraft family in the colors of airline customers form the four corners of the world. The fly-past led up to the presentation of the A330, which took its place alongside the A320 and A340 as the third member of the consortium's new generation of aircraft.
By the end of September, Airbus Industrie had already won some 500 commitments for the A330/A340 family, including 143 firm orders for the A330 and 127 firm orders for the A340. In the United States, firm orders for A330s have been placed by Continental Airlines (13), International Lease Finance Corp. (11), Northwest Airlines (16) and Trans World Airlines (20).
