AIRBORNE EXPRESS ANNOUNCES RATE INCREASE

SEATTLE, Jan. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Airborne Freight Corp. (NYSE: ABF), which operates under the trade name Airborne Express, announced today a general rate increase of 5 percent, its first price increase in two years. The new rates, which are scheduled to take effect March 1, 1993, will apply to all customers, excluding those under special contract.
"Airborne prides itself on providing quality service at the lowest prices possible," noted President Robert G. Brazier. "While this rate increase was a necessary move to meet rising costs, our prices are still among the lowest in our industry," Brazier added.
Coming off the most ambitious capital investment program in its history, Airborne is enacting this rate adjustment to sustain its current levels of service, to provide on-going capital improvements and to keep up with our rapid growth."
Airborne Express is the nation's fastest growing air express company, serving corporate America with the delivery of time-sensitive letters, documents, small packages and freight throughout the United States with its wide range of products that include next-morning, next-afternoon, second-day, and same-day delivery service and pre- paid flight ready letter.
In its fifth decade of international service, Airborne delivers to more than 200 countries worldwide, and is the first U.S. transportation company to be ISO 9000 certified at a U.S. location.
