AIRBORNE'S QUICKLINK SOFTWARE MAKES EDI CONVERSION A SNAP

SEATTLE, Nov. 17 ~PRNewswire~ -- Setting the standard for elect ronic data interchange (EDI) technology in the air express industry, Airborne Express recently introduced QuickLink.
QuickLink is an Airborne-developed software program that assists customers with their programming efforts in implementing one of Airborne's EDI offerings, Customer Linkage. Airborne is the first air express carrier to introduce a solution that speeds the implementation -- and lowers the costs -- of sophisticated EDI technologies.
Customer Linkage is Airborne's computer-to-computer data transfer system that makes customers' shipment processing an extension of their order entry systems. Customers print their own shipping labels, produce end of day reports, rate their packages and transmit daily information to Airborne.
"QuickLink will reduce the amount of time it takes customers to install Linkage by up to 75 percent," said Joy Williams, Airborne customer automation consultant. "One of the biggest benefits is that QuickLink will work in any customer's shipping environment. They are still the ones calling the shots."
QuickLink software performs end-of-day processing for Linkage customers by automatically calculating shipping rates and assigning invoice numbers. QuickLink also formats the day's shipping information for a driver's report to be printed and creates an EDI transmission file that's ready to be transferred electronically to Airborne every night. Prior to the introduction of QuickLink, these functions needed special programming by the customer.
"Before QuickLink, we had to label and input barcode numbers by hand. Now, it is all done automatically," said Garrett Dangerfield, senior programmer for R.C.C.C.I., a data processing company that offers floral reminder services. "QuickLink's automation saves us three to five minutes per package, which increases our ability to process more packages and makes our lives much easier."
Installation of QuickLink is supported by Airborne's experienced information specialists. "We had QuickLink running and fully integrated into our distribution center in seven working days," said Peter Miska, MIS project manager for Oticon Inc., a major manufacturer of hearing aids. "The dedication and commitment of the Airborne staff made the installation a snap. The software has great documentation and the overall service from Airborne has been excellent. I could not have asked for a better group to help us with this installation."
Any company shipping at least 100 packages per day is eligible to take advantage of QuickLink software. Interested customers need a mainframe or mini computer with a COBOL compiler, or a DOS-compatible PC to use the software. QuickLink can save these high-volume companies with distribution challenges time and money.
