AIR TREATMENT SYSTEM INSTALLED IN SISTINE CHAPEL

/ADVANCE/VATICAN CITY, June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- At an audience in the Vatican today, (Friday, June 4), Pope John Paul II officially accepted the completed air treatment system for the Sistine Chapel from Mr. William Frago, president of Carrier Corporation, the world's largest air conditioning manufacturer.
The Chapel's precious ceiling frescoes by Michelangelo are clean again for the first time since their completion in 1512. A system of advanced environmental control is needed to preserve them from the possibility of damage by the combined effects of condensation, airborne pollutants and humidity fluctuations. Every breath of the two million visitors the chapel receives each year poses a threat and every moment doors or windows are opened there is a possibility of damage.
The new system has been designed to counter atmospheric dangers. It has been installed with the utmost sensitivity to the historic and artistic fabric of the fifteenth century building.
A network of small electronic sensors constantly measures the atmospheric conditions in the Chapel. By means of Carrier's patented CCN technology these control the temperature and humidity of the air to maintain the well-researched constant environmental requirements.
The treated air enters through ducts under the Chapel's windows, about 15 meters up. All the air used is filtered, washed and processed before it is blown into the space, in effect bathing everyone with a shower of clean air. The indoor air is extracted from beneath visitors' feet. No air is recirculated. The windows themselves will remain closed to Rome's noise and pollution.
Carrier Corporation is the world's largest manufacturer of heating and air conditioning systems and equipment. It is a subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation (UTC) (NYSE: UTX), provider of a broad range of high technology products and support services in the aerospace, building systems and automotive industries.
