AIR NIPPON ORDERS BOEING 737-500s

SEATTLE, Dec. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Air Nippon Co., the domestic subsidiary of All Nippon Airways (ANA) of Japan, has ordered seven 737-500s and secured options for an additional eight, the Boeing Commercial Airplane Group (BCAG) confirmed today.
Value of the total order, including options and spare parts, is about $660 million.
Air Nippon said it selected the Boeing 737-500 from several candidates including the Fokker 100, BAe-146, MD-87 and proposed A319. "We are extremely pleased that Air Nippon selected the 737-500 over competing aircraft in its category. All Nippon has been a long-term customer of Boeing, and we look forward to sustaining an equally long relationship with Air Nippon in supporting Boeing aircraft," said Larry S. Dickenson, BCAG vice president for international sales.
The carrier said the 737-500s are for domestic routes because the Boeing aircraft meets its requirements for low-noise, medium-sized jetliners. The new 737s will replace YS-11s.
This newest and smallest member of the 737 family provides mixed- class seating for 108 passengers but can be configured for as many as 132. The -500 shares the advanced technologies of the larger -300 and -400 models, including improved structural materials, advanced digital avionics and quiet, fuel efficient high-bypass engines.
In restructuring its local air routes, Air Nippon already has purchased one 737-200 and leased nine others from ANA, its parent company.
Air Nippon was established in 1974 for domestic service, primarily linking the Japanese islands with the main island of Japan. The Air Nippon network connects 33 cities throughout Japan including those in Hokkaido, central and southern Japan, and Okinawa.
To date, Boeing has logged orders for 3,039 of the 737s, the most widely sold civil airliner in history. Of those, 272 are 737-500s. Total Boeing announced orders for 1992 have reached 242 aircraft with a combined value of $17.7 billion.
