AIR METHODS ANNOUNCES NEW CONTRACT WITH SAN JUAN REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER OF NEW MEXICO

DENVER, Jan. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Air Methods Corp. (AMEX: ARF.EC), the nation's largest exclusive provider of air medical transportation systems and services, today announced its receipt of a new contract from the Air Care 1 program of the San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington, N.M. The revised contract upgrades existing air medical helicopter systems and services to include an IFR Bell 222 UT helicopter. Previously, the Air Care 1 program operated an IFR Bell 206 L-3 LongRanger helicopter.
The San Juan Regional Medical Center serves as a Level II Trauma Center for the Four Corners region of the United States, supporting more than 250,000 people living within a 150 mile radius of the hospital campus. This 141-bed facility launched its helicopter air medical transport program, Air Care 1, in July 1992. Air Methods will continue to provide pilots and mechanics to operate the helicopter.
The Bell 222 features twin engine capability which allows it to continue its mission even on one engine. The helicopter also incorporates the newest Air Methods medical interior, the Pauley Pak III. This state-of-the-art medical interior, converts the Bell 222 into a flying intensive care unit designed for one purpose, to save lives.
The Pauley Pak III medical interior includes high-technology medical fixtures and provides ample space to utilize specialized medical equipment such as a neonatal isolette or an intra aortic balloon pump. The interior is capable of transporting two acute-care patients or one intensive care patient. Additionally, the medical interior can transport up to four medical professionals and their equipment.
 W. Terrance Schreier, chairman and chief executive officer of Air Methods, said, "This new contract significantly enhances the service capabilities of the Air Care 1 program and represents an emerging trend in the industry towards modernization of healthcare systems and services. Such positive momentum serves to solidify our role as the trendsetter in the EMS aeromedical industry."
Air Methods is the largest exclusive provider of state-of-the-art emergency air medical transportation systems and services to hospitals throughout the United States. Air Methods now serves 43 hospitals and 12 states under 19 dedicated long-term operating agreements. The company utilizes only IFR-certified pilots and aircraft, including 26 helicopters and five airplanes, to perform these services. In addition, Air Methods offers completely integrated airborne medical systems for administering intensive care to patients while flying to a trauma center or a tertiary care facility, either from outlying hospitals or the scene of an accident.
