AIR LIQUIDE AWARDED LARGE CONTRACT TO PRODUCE CLEAN ENERGY

WALNUT CREEK, Calif., March 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The Destec Engineering Co. has awarded a contract for over $30 million to Liquid Air Engineering Corp., an Air Liquide Group company, to build a 1,900-metric-tons-per-day oxygen plant with some nitrogen, Liquid Air Engineering said today.
The oxygen will be used to produce synthetic gas from coal to feed a nominal 270 MW electric power generating plant which Destec Energy (NYSE: ENG) is building in joint venture with PSI Energy at Terre Haute, Ind., and is part of the U.S. Department of Energy's Clean Coal Technology Program.
The air plant will be ready for commercial production by early 1995, will be designed in Liquid Air Engineering's office in San Francisco, and built in their construction shop in Montreal.
Electric power generation from coal gasification through the use of oxygen is expected to improve the efficiency of repowered generating units by more than 20 percent. Not only does coal gasification led to higher production output than traditional power plants, it further allows better clean-up of flue gases. Worldwide growth in the clean electric energy sector represents new sales opportunities for Air Liquide for air plants and industrial gases.
The Destec Engineering Co. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Destec Energy Inc., which is a subsidiary of the Dow Chemical Co. (NYSE: DOW).
Liquid Air Engineering Corp. is a North American subsidiary of the Air Liquide Group of companies. In addition to the 3,000-plus air separation units built worldwide, the group's engineering subsidiaries have designed a large number of hydrogen, ethylene and hydrocarbon recovery systems based on cryogenic adsorption and permeation technologies.
The Air Liquide Group of companies has 28,000 employees in 59 countries and is headed by L'Air Liquide, S.A. in Paris. L'Air Liquide is the world leader in the industrial gas market.
