AIR LINE PILOTS ASSOCIATION FILES FOR ELECTION TO REPRESENT AMERICA WEST PILOTS

PHOENIX, Aug. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Yesterday, at the request of the America West Pilots' Organizing Committee, the Air Line Pilots Association filed with the National Mediation Board in Washington a petition for a representation election among America West pilots seeking to have ALPA certified as the collective bargaining agent for their pilot group.
"Our goal of ALPA representation has the overwhelming support of America West pilots," said Capt. Michael Martin, spokesman for the America West Pilots' Organizing Committee. "We are committed to the success of our airline, and we have proven our commitment with hard work, dedication and a willingness to make difficult but necessary sacrifices. At the same time, we feel that the specialized needs of our profession and the specific needs of this pilot group will best be served by responsible representation and a legal, binding contract.
"We chose ALPA because of its proven 63-year history of representing pilot interests effectively," Martin continued, "and because ALPA will provide us with the resources to enhance the careers of America West pilots while ensuring that the financial needs of our company are accurately considered. We are confident that representation by ALPA is entirely consistent with our desire to give our company the dedication and flexibility it needs to compete in the deregulated environment."
ALPA President Capt. J. Randolph Babbitt applauded the America West pilots' approach to representation. "Career goals are invariably linked to the financial strength of the employee's airline," said Babbitt. "Career security cannot exist at an unstable company that lacks the ability to grow and prosper. The America West pilots placed a high priority on these facts when they approached ALPA about supporting them in a representation election. We were able to demonstrate that ALPA has the resources and professional expertise to help them achieve their career goals while observing the economic realties of their company."
ALPA is the largest labor union and professional organization of U.S. airline pilots. It is affiliated with the AFL-CIO and holds bargaining rights for 41,000 airline pilots at 44 U.S. carriers.
