AIR CLEANUP QUICK AND SIMPLE: PUMP UP TIRES

AKRON, Ohio, Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Motorists concerned about the quality of the air they breathe can make a real difference with a simple adjustment of the air in their tires, according to North America's leading tiremaker.
Goodyear says that published estimates by the U.S. Department of Energy indicate that up to 4 billion gallons of gasoline could be saved each day if tires were kept inflated to the vehicle manufacturer's recommended pressures.
Those 4 million gallons, when used to propel motor vehicles, account annually for an estimated 13 million metric tons of unnecessary CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, according to Goodyear's director of tire technology for North America, Walt Curtiss.
"If we're really concerned about the environment, a simple inflation check can clean up CO2 emissions and save money at the gas pump without costing you more than the price of a reliable air pressure gauge," Curtiss said. "One gallon of gasoline burned creates a chemical reaction that results in 20.2 pounds of CO2 released into the atmosphere."
The beauty of maintaining proper inflation pressure as a pollution fighter, according to Curtiss, is that "the impact o ?environment is immediate as opposed to technological developments that may take years to fully realize," he said.
Curtiss said the CO2 reduction considers only vehicles in the U.S. "If you include vehicles worldwide, the impact is considerably more significant," he said. "Auto and truck registrations in the U.S. account for approximately 30 percent of the world vehicle population."
Curtiss suggests that motorists check their vehicle's tire pressure when the tires are "cold" (driven less than one mile), and make certain the pressure corresponds to that recommended by the vehicle manufacturer shown on the information placard or the sticker attached to the vehicle's door or glove compartment.
