AIR CANADA MARKS FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF NON-SMOKING FLIGHTS WORLDWIDE
NEW YORK, Jan. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Air Canada today marked its first full year of becoming the first international airline to offer travelers a total smoke-free environment on all scheduled flights worldwide, and is still the only airline with such a policy.
Passenger reaction has been overwhelmingly positive and ongoing studies show that the number of non-smokers switching to Air Canada has exceeded the numbers of smokers going to other airlines that still offer smoking sections in cabins - and that even many smokers prefer non- smoking flights. Air Canada employee reaction is equally positive; especially among aircraft maintenance workers who now spend less time with flight cabin upkeep due to passenger's smoking, such as cleaning ashtrays and stained carpets and scrubbing aircraft interiors walls. Indeed, Air Canada has realized almost a million dollar saving in aircraft maintenance costs.
Air Canada pioneered total in-flight non-smoking in 1986 on selected flights in Canada and became the first major North American carrier to introduce the smoke-free concept in the United States when it expanded its fledgling non-smoking policy to all Air Canada flights from New York in April, 1987. The airline gradually introduced total non-smoking to more flights, culminating in Jan., 1991 with all of its scheduled flights worldwide.
Air Canada has since received many honors in recognition for its leadership in the airline industry to offer the traveling public total non-smoking flights, including and award from the United Nations' World Health Organization.
