AIR CANADA APPOINTS HOLLIS HARRIS VICE CHAIRMAN, PRESIDENT AND CEO
MONTREAL, Feb. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- On behalf of the board of directors of Air Canada, Claude I. Taylor, chairman of the board, announced the appointment of veteran airline executive, Hollis L. Harris, as vice chairman, president and chief executive officer of Air Canada.
Taylor expressed the board's delight that Harris, the former president and chief operating officer of Delta Air Lines, was assuming the leadership of Canada's biggest airline, effective immediately.
"There simply isn't a better qualified person to manage Air Canada," said Taylor. "I personally feel very excited for the future of our company with Hollis at the helm. He is a quality airline man with 37 years of hands-on experience. He has a strong feel for customer service, the bottom line, operating efficiency and the interests of our employees."
Harris, 60, was president and COO at Delta from 1987-1990, after which he became chairman, president and CEO of Continental Airlines and president and CEO of Continental Airlines Holdings, Inc. He left Continental last year to become chairman and CEO of Air Eagle Holdings, an Atlanta-based aviation consulting service.
"Hollis Harris has all the qualities, knowledge and drive required to lead Air Canada at this critical point in its history," said Taylor.
"He has managed two of North America's largest airlines in the world's touhest competitive marketplace. Now he is bringing that expertise to Air Canada to build us into a major global competitor."
Harris joined Delta in 1954 as a transportation agent in the marketing division, later becoming an aircraft engineer and head of the aircraft engineering department. He subsequently served in key management roles in facilities, in-flight service, passenger service and operations.
He holds an aeronautical engineering degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology and has held high-level positions in community activities such as the Boy Scouts of America, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and Kiwanis International.
Harris and his wife will make their home in Montreal.
