AIR BERLIN RECEIVES BOEING 737-400, ORDERS ANOTHER

SEATTLE, April 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Air Berlin this week took delivery of a new 737-400, the airline's first 737 purchased directly from Boeing, and announced that it had converted an earlier option into a firm order for an additional 737-400, Boeing Commercial Airplane Group said today.
Air Berlin Managing Director Joachim Hunold, in Seattle for the delivery, said: "The 737-400 is an airplane we think we can grow with. Providing dependable and economical service is crucial in today's competitive environment, and this airplane delivers the kind of reliability and low operating costs that will help us continue to grow."
Air Berlin has been operating four leased 737-400s, one of which was recently purchased from the lessor. The airline flies routes between Berlin, Bremen, Dresden, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Leipzig, Munich, Munster/Osnabruck, Nurnberg and Paderborn, and the Mediterranean and Canary Islands. Air Berlin became a fully registered German company following the reunification of Germany in 1991.
The three models of the new-generation 737 family offer seating capacities ranging from 108 to approximately 170 seats. As configured for Air Berlin, the 737-400s will accommodate 167 passengers in a single-class arrangement.
With this order from Air Berlin, 159 customers have ordered 3,041 Boeing 737s, of which 420 are the -400 model.
