AIOU to build a model library to promote self-learning.
Islamabad -- Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) will turn its existing library into model one to promote selflearning and make it a major source of knowledge for research work.
The AIOU's library will be number one in the country and will be available to general public. Its whole system has been switched over to latest software version, ensuring accessibility of the book, research Journals and thesis at the readers' doorstep, said vicechancellor Prof. Dr. Shahid Siddiqui.
Speaking at a training workshop that held here at the University's main campus, for library's and IT staff, he said the library will be linked with modernized and automation system, so that readers feel comfortable in equipping themselves with latest knowledge. The reading material will meet the contemporary needs, he assured.
The library, he said will be a big support to researchers, who will be able to access the reading material through online automatic digital system. All possible efforts are being made to upgrade the library facilities, he added.
Timing of the library has been extended forthwith, and the now it will remain open from 8.30 am to 6.30 pm on all working days, including Saturday. During the summer, the library will remain open till 8 pm.
The books' data of the library will be made operational through advanced software system. There will be also automatic system for circulation of books among the readers. Radio frequency identification system will be introduced for the safety of the books.
Dr. Shahid Siddiqui said the AIOU library is firstever in the country which has scanned around 4,000 theses of PhD, M.Phil, Ms and Masters' level and made available to the students with full text, through online digital system. The students across the country could benefit from these theses, by visiting the University's website.
It was decided to further expand the space of the library, to accommodate maxim number of readers. Arrangements were also reviewed at the meeting to provide most friendly environment to the readers.
Since the total program of the Open University is unique in its features, the library offers resources and services. It supports the preparation of courses and the pursuit of research through its resources and services and provides an inhouse audiovisual aids and equipment services.
According to incharge of the Library, Muhammad Umar The library has thousands of print and nonprint materials to provide academic facilities to the students and teachers. It provides internship facilities to students to get themselves aware of the library working. He assured that the students visiting the library will find here most friendly environment.
