AILEEN, INC., REPORTS SEPTEMBER SAME-STORE SALES

NEW YORK, Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Aileen, Inc. (NYSE: AEE), a manufacturer and retailer of women's apparel, today announced that its comparable store sales for the four weeks ended Sept. 25, 1993, reflecting the sales of 122 of its 143 retail stores open at the end of such period, declined by approximately 26 percent from the sales of such stores for the comparable period in September 1992, at the end of which the company was operating 128 stores. Total net retail sales for this four-week period in 1993 were approximately $4,051,000, compared to $4,948,000 in 1992.
The company attributed the substantial decline in the same-store sales statistics in part to delays in shipping fall season merchandise to the stores following a fire which forced a shutdown of one of the company's domestic sewing plants. According to Robert W. Tarpley, president, "The delays in stocking the stores with fall merchandise, following a period during which retail inventories were reduced to reflect current buying levels, has significantly hurt the company's sales performance for September. As we move into October, the company expects store inventories to be close to normal levels."
