AIDS/HIV CARE INITIATIVES EARN SAN DIEGO CAREMARK BRANCH
 NATIONAL RECOGNITION
LINCOLNSHIRE, Ill., May 14 /PRNewswire/ -- For its support of people with HIV and AIDS, Caremark Inc.'s San Diego office, 5754 Pacific Center Blvd., has been named one of the company's top 10 HIV branches for 1991.
Caremark has treated people with the AIDS virus since the early 1980s, both at home and, more recently, also through a national network of neighborhood walk-in ''Connection'' centers. The company, the largest non-hospital health care services provider, is an affiliate of Baxter Healthcare Corp.
Over the last decade, approximately 14,000 people who are HIV positive or who have AIDS have been helped by Caremark, including some 6,000 patients in 1991 alone, an indication of the rapid spread of the disease. As the symptoms of the virus change during its advance, altering patients' needs, the company provides medication, nutritional assessment and psycho-social counseling. Caremark also serves as a local access point for community resources, including seminars, support groups and networking.
Caremark general manager Monica Frederick said the company's emphasis is on extending support throughout the community, both to help people who are HIV positive and to provide information and increase understanding among those who are not.
Frederick said Caremark actively contributes financial resources locally and nationally to HIV clinical trials and research efforts, educational programs, organizational memberships and other activities. Additionally, local staff volunteer their time to assist with fund- raising events, serve on support-group committees and make community presentations on care and treatment.
"The number of people with HIV is expanding so fast that the need for experienced, responsive care and broad support outside the hospital setting is more critical than ever," said Charles H. Blanchard, president and chief executive officer of Caremark. "Patients want, and have a right, to live at home and retain as much control over their lives as possible, and we are there to help them.
"The HIV 'branch of the year' honors signify outstanding performance for patients, both directly by helping to manage their medical needs and indirectly by giving something extra back to the community," he continued.
