AHPA HEARS RESOLUTION FOR REINSTATEMENT OF FISHER SCIENTIFIC WORKERS' RIGHTS AND CONTINUATION OF HEALTH CARE BENEFITS

AHPA HEARS RESOLUTION FOR REINSTATEMENT OF FISHER SCIENTIFIC WORKERS'
RIGHTS AND CONTINUATION OF HEALTH CARE BENEFITS
The Teamsters Union issued the following:
A late-breaking resolution calling for the reinstatement of workers' rights and the continuation of health care benefits for Fisher Scientific workers will be introduced at 2 p.m. today to the policy committee meeting at the American Public Health Association Convention in Washington. The resolution calls on APHA members to boycott Fisher Scientific products until the workers, who are represented by the Teamsters Union, are reinstated.
The Teamsters Union has formed a national campaign to stop Fisher Scientific from permanently replacing 77 experienced workers and denying their health care insurance. Fisher raised health insurance costs by 450 percent. When workers offered an alternative plan that would save the company money, Fisher responded by locking out workers, forcing a strike, and permanently replacing longtime, dedicated workers.
As part of that campaign, members of the Physicians and Scientists For Justice For Fisher Employees coalition will be leafletting during the APHA convention to encourage their colleagues in the medical and scientific community to join the national boycott of Fisher products.
In a related action, Boston City Council member John A. Nucci will file a resolution today that would prohibit public institutions under city administration from buying products from Fisher Scientific. New York City has already passed a similar resolution.
Fisher Scientific is the oldest and largest supplier of instruments, supplies, and equipment to the scientific community in North America.
