AGT CELLULAR SELECTS HUGHES DUAL-MODE PHONES FOR
 WORLD'S FIRST DIGITAL CELLULAR IMPLEMENTATION
CALGARY, Alberta, June 25 /PRNewswire/ -- AGT Cellular of Alberta today became the world's first carrier to provide digital "TDMA" cellular telephone service with the world's first end-to-end digital phone calls placed over the M6100 dual-mode telephone from Hughes Network Systems (HNS). Digital service was officially inaugurated at 10 a.m. Mountain Time at AGT Cellular's headquarters in Calgary. The M6100 cellular telephone was selected for this industry "first" by AGT Cellular based on the phone's performance and quality.
AGT Cellular's leadership in digital service marks the beginning of an industrywide transition from the overcrowded analog airwaves of the present cellular environment to more efficient, resource- conservative systems built upon digital technology. The Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association has designated TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) the industry standard for digital cellular technology, and today formally congratulated AGT Cellular on its landmark TDMA introduction.
Hughes has been a strong proponent of the evolution to TDMA, drawing upon its stature as a world leader in TDMA-based communications to help launch the digital cellular industry. The M6100 fully accommodates the proposed transition by supporting both analog and TDMA transmissions. While analog systems remain the predominant offering throughout North America, the TDMA digital service offered as of today in Alberta is also being readied in several major U.S. cities for service in 1992.
TDMA offers enhanced precision of signal routing and transmission, providing significantly improved sound clarity over current analog systems. TDMA also promises to dramatically increase cell capacity and permit cellular carriers to offer a wider range of services to their customers.
The M6100 was specifically engineered to optimize customers' investment in cellular service, through its dual-mode capability, as well as a range of features that save time and reduce costs for both carriers and subscribers. The M6100's many safety and ease-of-use considerations include a dot-matrix vacuum fluorescent display with a wraparound lens. This feature provides unsurpassed readability in all lighting conditions and from all angles. The M6100 also boasts alphanumeric capability, 99 memory locations, and easy-to-read, scrolling menus.
Said Pradeep Kaul, executive vice president of HNS: "The selection of our M6100 for this landmark implementation affirms our decision to build and market the most advanced cellular subscriber unit in the world. The phone's design optimizes both aesthetic appeal and technical functionality, offering carriers and subscribers alike the best value for their money. AGT Cellular's order has been joined by orders from other major U.S. cellular operators."
AGT Cellular is Alberta's leading supplier of cellular and paging services, and a subsidiary of publicly traded, Alberta-based TELUS Corporation, one of Canada's largest telecommunications companies.
Hughes Network Systems, Inc., is a world leader in advanced digital telecommunications. Provider of the M6100 analog/digital dual mode cellular phone and the GMH 2000 digital cellular switch, HNS also operates GM Net, a proprietary cellular telephone network now operational in several major U.S. cities. Headquartered near Washington, HNS is a subsidiary of Hughes Aircraft Co., a unit of GM Hughes Electronics.
