AGRIDYNE RECEIVES FOOD CROP REGISTRATION FROM THE EPA FOR ITS NEEM-BASED BIOINSECTICIDE

SALT LAKE CITY, June 7 /PRNewswire/ -- AgriDyne Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: AGRI) today announced that it has received registration and marketing clearance from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the use of its neem-based bioinsecticide on all food and feed crops.
According to Eric B. Hale, president and chief executive officer, AgriDyne is the first company to be granted EPA registration for agronomic crop use of a neem-based bioinsecticide.
The company's botanically derived bioinsecticides contain the active ingredient azadirachtin (AZA), a complex, naturally occurring molecule extracted from the seed of neem trees. Found in more than 50 countries worldwide, including India, Indonesia and several African nations, the tropical neem tree has long been recognized for its natural insecticidal properties.
"What a great day for AgriDyne," Hale said. "This event serves to substantially increase the company's market potential by allowing us to address the majority of the estimated $1.2 billion U.S. insecticide market without further federal regulatory action. Farmers who are concerned about the environment and the problems of insect resistance can now look to AgriDyne for effective alternatives to traditional synthetic chemicals in a wide range of markets."
The company plans to introduce the product under the trade name Align(TM) to vegetable and fruit growers in selected areas of the United States, on a limited basis, later this year. An expanded introduction of Align is planned for 1994 following the ramp-up of raw materials production.
AgriDyne's AZA-based bioinsectides offer growers a new way to control insect pests using a naturally occurring insect growth regulator that is "soft" on the environment and compatible with other forms of integrated pest management. AZA kills target insects by interfering with molting, an insect's normal growth process.
"This unique mode of action, coupled with its effectiveness against a wide range of insects, make our products very versatile bioinsecticides capable of addressing multiple markets," said Dr. Will D. Carpenter, AgriDyne chairman and former Monsanto executive.
The EPA granted AgriDyne non-food crop registration and marketing clearance for Azatin(R) and Turplex(TM), neem-based products used to control insects in the greenhouse and turf markets, respectively, in January 1992. The company began selling both products in late-1992.
Based in Salt Lake City, AgriDyne Technologies Inc. is committed to solving pest control and plant care needs through the development and marketing of innovative environmentally compatible crop protection products.
