AGREEMENT PROVIDES DRAMATIC SAVING

HIGHLAND PARK, Mich., Dec. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Chrysler Corporation (NYSE: C) officials are electrified over the significant hot-air savings its Chrysler Canada Ltd. subsidiary will realize beginning in 1995.
Chrysler Canada and TransAlta Energy Corporation signed a contract for a unique approach to supplying thermal energy (steam) to the company's Windsor Assembly plant.
The Chrysler/TransAlta project is the first large-scale cogeneration project involving an automotive assembly plant.
TransAlta will build a natural-gas-fired 135 megawatt (nominal) plant to provide electricity for Ontario Hydro. Steam is generated using the excess heat, which is typically not used and is released into the environment in a conventional generating plant.
Today's agreement calls for Chrysler's Windsor facility to obtain steam from the new TransAlta power plant, which will be constructed near the automaker. The steam will be used for space and process heating at the Windsor plant.
"This project is a great example of Chrysler's commitment to finding innovative ways to cut costs and enhance our competitive position," said Dennis K. Pawley, Chrysler executive vice president - Manufacturing.
TransAlta President and Chief Executive Officer Ken McCready said, "We are pleased to have reached this agreement with Chrysler. This project is a win-win-win situation for all involved: TransAlta, Chrysler, and the city of Windsor."
The project's construction is expected to generate several million dollars in the local economy, and create construction jobs.
The TransAlta family of companies have supplied electricity to the Province of Alberta for more than 80 years.
Chrysler is scheduled to begin receiving steam Jan. 1, 1995.
