AGING DEPARTMENT ADVISES ON 'MEDIGAP' OPEN ENROLLMENT
AGING DEPARTMENT ADVISES ON 'MEDIGAP' OPEN ENROLLMENT HARRISBURG, Pa., Nov. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Secretary of Aging Linda M.
Rhodes today advised all Pennsylvanians age 65 and older to take advantage of an open enrollment period through May to select Medigap, the Medicare supplemental health insurance.
"We want older Pennsylvanians to know that under a 1990 federal law, insurance companies must offer open enrollment for Medigap policies for the next six months to older people with health problems," Rhodes said. Medigap insurance generally pays that portion of medical bills not paid by Medicare, including the hospital deductible and 20 percent of outpatient services. "Medigap policies are vital to older people," Rhodes said. "Congress has done older consumers a big favor, but they must sign up for the Medigap coverage within the next six months." To help inform older Pennsylvanians about the Medigap open enrollment period, Rhodes has sent notices to the 52 Area Agencies on Aging, Pennsylvania Council on Aging, the American Association of Retired Persons, senior advocacy groups and provider organizations and the state Insurance Department. For more information on Medigap insurance, call the Pennsylvania Insurance Department at 717-787-2317. /delval/ -0- 11/26/91 /CONTACT: Kate Megargee of the Department of Aging, 717-783-1549/ CO: Department of Aging ST: Pennsylvania IN: SU:
