AGFA AND HP SIGN NEW LONG-TERM TECHNOLOGY PACT
WILMINGTON, Mass., April 23 /PRNewswire/ Agfa and

Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HWP) today announced that the two companies have entered into a new long-term technology and marketing agreement. Under terms of this agreement, Agfa will continue to supply font technology and typefaces to HP for use in current and future printer products.
Agfa and HP originally began working together in 1987 when HP licensed Intellifont(R) and Intellifont scalable typefaces from Agfa. The Intellifont font scaling technology and scalable typefaces are an integral part of the printer language resident in the LaserJet III printer family. HP and Agfa will continue to co-develop new font solutions under this agreement.
"This agreement strengthens the relationship of two technology leaders as we continue to see the 1990's evolving into the decade of 'technical cooperation' " said Rob Auster, group director of electronic printing of BIS Strategic Decisions, Inc., a Norwell, Mass.-based market research firm. "The result of this accord is that end users will continue to get increasingly sophisticated type solutions at affordable prices."
"Our agreement with Agfa in developing end user solutions has been a particularly important one to HP over the last several years," said Steve Simpson, general manager of the HP Boise Printer Division. "Agfa's Intellifont technology and typeface library has helped our Laser-Jet printers gain the reputation for high-quality printing they now enjoy."
"We're very pleased that HP remains committed to our Intellifont technology," said Robert Givens, vice president of the Typographic Systems group at Agfa. "We're well positioned to help HP maintain market leadership with its future generation of printers and will work closely with HP's engineering team to meet the font demands of our rapidly changing market."
Agfa recently announced the availability of the Agfa custom cartridge for the Hewlett-Packard Laser-Jet II and III family of printers which lets customers load fonts, logos, and frequently used signatures onto personalized printer cartridges.
Other HP products which have incorporated Agfa's technology include: Type Director, Intellifont-for-Windows, Intellifont-for-X Windows, Laser-Jet FAX, over 90 scalable typefaces available on diskette or cartridge media, and the DeskJet, DeskWriter, PaintJet, and PaintWriter printer families.
Agfa, the imaging division of Miles, Inc., designs, manufactures and markets electronic and photographic prepress systems, type and font products including phototypesetting materials, reprographic and processing equipment, and presentation graphics systems for graphic arts and other professional uses.
