AGA KHAN HONORED AT UNIVERSITY OF WALES CENTENARY

CARDIFF, Wales, Dec. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, as Chancellor of the University of Wales, today conferred the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws on His Highness the Aga Khan, spiritual leader of the Ismaili Muslims, at a ceremony marking the centenary of the foundation of the University of Wales. Also awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in the same ceremony was the president of Ireland, Mary Robinson.
The university honors the Aga Khan as "a humanitarian" for his "work that has diminished poverty, unemployment, and ignorance," the degree citation noted, stating that the institutions established by the Aga Khan had "a matchless record of creative endeavor among the poorer people of our world." The degree citation made specific mention of the health, education, and rural development programs successfully undertaken by the Aga Khan Development Network in Africa and Asia. Also recognized in the citation were the Network's economic development initiatives as well as its cultural programs, which reflected the Aga Khan's concern for the built environment, the quality of architectural education, and for the rehabilitation of historic cities and their preservation "as keys to community renewal and revitalization."
Others honored at the same ceremony were: Professor Vaughan Jones, mathematician; the Rev. Islwyn Efowe Elis, prominent Welsh novelist and essayist; Professor D. Ellis Evans, Celtic scholar; Kyffin Williams, leading Welsh artist; the Rev. Professor Owen Chadwick, historian and ecclesiastical scholar; and the Right Honorable Lord Jakobivits of Regent's Park, theologian.
In the evening, the Prince of Wales, the Aga Khan, Robinson, and the other honorary graduates were guests at a centenary banquet hosted by the University at the Cardiff City Hall.
